In 1971, Lloret de Mar was declared the “Town of Sardana”. On this occasion, the municipality decided to build a monument dedicated to the Catalan dance, which was designed and executed by the sculptor of Girona, Domenech Feith.
Sardana is the national dance of Catalonia, a dance of joy and brotherhood, performed during the holidays on the squares and streets of Catalan towns and villages. Sardana is performed not by professionals but by ordinary people in the open air. Dancers gather in different circles, hold each other’s hands and start dancing to the music. Orchestra, accompanying Sardana is called “Kobla” and consists of twelve musicians, some of whom play instruments that are exclusively used for this dance.
